Kevin Groot Lipman
Netherlands Cancer Institute
Netherlands Cancer Institute
As technical physician with expertise in artificial intelligence and medical imaging, dr. Kevin Groot Lipman combines technical knowledge with medical insight to advance healthcare technology. Graduating from the University of Twente with a specialization in Technical Medicine—Medical Imaging & Intervention—he laid a strong foundation for his research and clinical implementation work.
Early in his career, he gained hands-on experience at prestigious institutions like the Netherlands Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. It allowed him to apply deep learning models to complex medical imaging challenges.
Kevin conducted his PhD research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, focusing on developing AI algorithms to streamline the evaluation of respiratory diseases. One of his AI models is already implemented at the institute, which demonstrates the practical impact of his research. His expertise also led to a visiting researcher position at the University Hospital of Zurich.
He is Co-PI of two Public-Private-Partnership grants (€1.5M and €1M) aimed at developing foundational models for medical imaging plus ctDNA and AI applications in breast imaging. Moreover, he got a personal grant of €70,000 by the Dutch Pulmonologists Society to further his studies in respiratory disease evaluation. During his Masters, he got second place in the University of Twente's Best Master Thesis competition for Technical Medicine. In the clinics, he integrated his own developed AI models into clinical workflows, improving patient follow-up through the ARTIMES project.
Kevin recently initiated a research direction exploring visual foundational models for radiology. By creating robust embeddings of radiological images, his research can potentially lead to transforming diagnostic practices and automate radiology reporting. He serves as the chairman of the young club of the European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics (EuSoMII), where he aims to strengthen collaboration among early-career clinical and technical professionals in the medical imaging field.
